Getting Your Kids In the Routine of School & Homework

mom helping child studyThe end of summer is just around the corner. For your children, this means getting back into the routine of waking up early, getting to school, and dealing with daily assignments. As a parent, you want to make this transition as easy as possible, but it becomes a bit tougher when your child is used to staying up late or spending their afternoons playing with friends. How do you prepare them and get them back into the routine of going to school and dealing with homework? Consider these tips!

Take Time to Transition

Rather than going from sleeping in one day to waking up early the next, try gradually adjusting your children’s sleep schedules. The sooner you start, the easier it should be for your children to adjust by the time school rolls around. As summer winds down, make sure your children are going to bed earlier and waking up a bit earlier every day. Once it’s time to go to school, the mornings won’t be nearly as difficult.

Refresh Their Memory

One of the toughest parts of going back to school after a long summer break is the workload. In the weeks leading up to the new school year, bring out some of the lessons they learned the prior year and give them a refresher course. This can be a great way to kick-start the new school year. Instead of wasting time trying to recall last year’s lessons, your children will be able to start learning new material right away.

Set Aside Time for Studying

Summer is a time for fun, but to keep your children in the habit of learning, set aside some time for them to read, get creative, and learn something new. Learning doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice summer fun either! Try taking your children to a museum, encourage arts-and-crafts time, or go on a nature scavenger hunt.

Make Breakfast a Priority

Summer is a time for relaxation, but too much relaxation can have mornings blending into afternoons. When this happens, your children can miss one of the most important meals: breakfast. As your kids are getting back into the routine and getting set to return to school, provide them with a balanced breakfast - this can help your children stay focused in the classroom. A good breakfast can improve attention and energy when your child needs it most, making sure they are ready for the school day.
