Staying Hydrated in the Texas Heat

Woman drinking waterIn the summer months, Texas can become uncomfortable from the high temperatures and heatwaves. Not only can this be difficult to deal with, it can also have an impact on your health when you become dehydrated and find yourself struggling. Dehydration can cause individuals to experience various symptoms, ranging from mild to moderate to severe, depending on how serious the condition is. While some of the symptoms are minor, the more severe symptoms can require the individuals to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

When someone suffers mild or moderate dehydration, they tend to experience dry skin, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, or dry and sticky mouth. For infants, you may notice a reduced urine output and less activity. When the dehydration is severe, it can result in a medical emergency if the individual is experiencing fever-like symptoms, rapid heartbeat and breathing, low blood pressure, little to no urination, and sunken eyes. In infants, they may experience sunken soft spots. The most serious cases of dehydration can also cause unconsciousness or delirium. This is why it is so important to make sure that you follow the steps below to make sure you and your loved ones stay properly hydrated.

Stick with Water

Many people opt to drink certain sports drinks or other beverages, thinking that it is the best way to stay hydrated. The truth is that most individuals are better off with water and foods with high water content such as fruits and vegetables. While sports drinks do have certain electrolytes that can be helpful during high intensity training, they generally contain high mounts of sugar and calories, which may be hard on your stomach. Make sure you stick with water before, during, and after you are outside.

Be Aware of the Signs

Some of the signs of dehydration that you should watch out for include dizziness, dry mouth, muscle troubles, and skin turgor. If you’re feeling lightheaded, be sure to stop doing what you’re doing and find water as soon as possible. You can check skin turgor by using the pointer finger and the thumb to lightly pinch your skin on the back of your hand. If the skin doesn’t bounce back to its normal position and appears delayed, it may be a sign that you are dehydrated. Also, your muscles may become more fatigued, making you feel weak or like you are cramping.

How Much Water is the Right Amount?

There are some organizations that recommend at least 9 to 13 cups of water each day for adult women and men, respectively. However, each person is different and the amount of water you should consume can be based on your age, your weight, your activity level, and your gender. Throughout the day, you want to make sure you are drinking water on a regular basis, especially while you are eating your meals. Drinking gradually throughout the day is the best option, as thirst may be a sign of dehydration and by that time, you may be experiencing some of the symptoms.

At Home Healthcare recognizes how important it is to make sure young children and adults are hydrated, especially if they are going to venture out into the Texas heat. This is crucial to making sure that they don’t experience the symptoms associated with dehydration and avoid serious health problems that can arise.
