New Year - New Organized and Decluttered Home

Woman with ClutterEvery year, people make a series of resolutions, promising to make life better or to improve themselves. One thing that should make it on your list every time is to organize and declutter your home, particularly after the holidays. Maybe you had a long vacation or perhaps you had such a busy holiday season that things got out of hand. It happens. The important thing is to start the New Year fresh and an organized home is a safer home.

Removing holiday decorations is a good place to start. It is easy to let these slide into February, March, or even later in the year, but holiday décor is not meant to stay out forever and some of them may present hazards to kids or elderly relatives. So, before you throw them all into a box for storage, sort them out, and make sure that what you decide to keep is something you will actually want to see again next December.

After your home is free of remnants from the holidays, you can truly begin to get things sorted out. Consider clearing your counters of items that you do not use on a daily basis. If your counters are cluttered, something may get knocked over, and end up on the floor, waiting for someone to trip on it. Clutter creates an environment that is prone to accidents, so the fewer items you leave out on your counters, or anywhere for that matter, the better.

Going through your entire home to ensure that everything has a proper place in which it can be stored is not only safer for all who live there, but aesthetically pleasing. Check the expiration dates on items and throw out whatever is expired. Another good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if you would buy the item you are holding onto if you saw it in the store again. Be honest; do you really want to keep something that is only taking up space?

Lastly, try to plan out a weekly system for maintaining a clean home. This is something you can do with your children who are old enough to help and will teach them good habits for the future as well as the importance of maintaining a clean and clutter-free living space.

At Home Support understands that, no matter the time of year, health and safety is important and taking care of your family is priority number one.
